Radio City Music Hall is an entertainment venue and theater located at 1260 Avenue of the Americas in Rockefeller Center in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Radio City Music Hall was built on the site originally intended for the Metropolitan Opera, although those plans were canceled in 1929 due to the Great Depression.
Its construction began in December 1931 and was completed a year later. It opened on December 27, 1932, as part of Rockefeller Center. The 5,960-seat Radio City Music Hall is one of the largest theaters in the world. It was largely successful until the 1970s, when declining attendances drove the theater to near bankruptcy.
Radio City Music Hall was designated a New York landmark in May 1978 when it was restored. The theater was extensively renovated in 1999.
Radio City Music Hall’s huge screen and large seats make it the ideal cinema. Since 1933 over 700 films have had their first screening here. They include King Kong, National Velvet, White Christmas, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, Mary Poppins, 101 Dalmatians and The Lion King. In the early years, a typical movie run lasted one week.
Later, the five or six weeks prevailed. Cary Grant, Ginger Rogers and Katharine Hepburn have won Radio City box office awards for the number of films shown here. All three have screened more than 22 of their films.
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is an annual Christmas musical produced by MSG Entertainment, which operates the theater. A New York Christmas tradition since 1933, featuring the all-female precision dance group known as The Rockettes.
